v INTRODUCTION
Ø History is a subject which tell us about past. It takes us to the olden time to know about the life of people, their games, their work, and even their food etc. Through this subject we come to know about past. The book OUR PAST-1 tell us about the ancient time (From early man to 600 AD)
v WHAT CAN WE KNOW ABOUT THE PAST?
Ø We can find out — what people ate, the kinds of clothes they wore, the houses in which they lived. We can find out about the lives of hunters, herders, farmers, rulers, merchants, priests, crafts persons, artists, musicians, and scientists
v THE EARLIEST PEOPLE
Ø The early people who lived along the banks of rivers hundred thousand years ago were called as skilled gatherers, as they were expert to gathered food.
v THE EARLIEST PEOPLE LIVED
The Sulaiman and Kirthar Hills
Firstly grow wheat and barley (8000 years ago).
North Vindhyas
Rice was first grown
Around Indus River and its tributary
Earliest cities flourished (4700 years ago)

v NAMES FOR OUR COUNTRY
Ø For our country India and Bharat words are used.
§  India comes from the name of river Indos. As Iranians use the term Indos or Hindos for the river Indus and the land called as India
§  Bharat-It comes from the group of people mentioned in the earliest book Rigveda around 2500 years ago.
v FINDING ABOUT PAST
Ø There are several ways to find out the past
§  Manuscripts –The hand written materials on palm leaves or on the specially prepared bark of a tree known as the birch was called as Manuscripts.
INSCRIPTION AND MANUSCRIPTS
§  Inscriptions-The material written on hard surfaces such as stone or metal are called as inscription.
Ø ARCHAEOLOGISTS-
§  The persons who study the remains of thing used in ancient time are called as archaeologists. They found many things as
§  Made up of stones- Buildings made of stones and bricks, paintings and sculpture, tools, weapons, pots, pans, ornaments and coins.
§  Other things-The bones of animals, birds, and fishes, seeds, pieces of woods, plant remains axes, in order to find out what people ate in the past.
v TIMES AND TERMS-
Ø All dates before the birth of Christ are counted backwards and usually have the letters BC (Before Christ) or BCE (Before Common Era)
Ø All dates after the birth of Christ have the letters As AD (Anno Domini-In the year of Lord.) or CE (Common Era)
v GLOSSORY
v Archaeologists: People who study the objects made and used in the past are called archaeologists.
v Excavation: The process of digging under the surface of the earth in order to find old objects is called excavation.
v Historians: Scholars who study the past are called historians.
v Tributaries: Smaller rivers that flow into a larger river are said to be its tributaries.
