UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY
(LESSON NOTES)

v INTRODUCTION:

Ø Dear students as you know that all we are looking different to one another. We also have the different style of handwriting, drawing style, working culture, etc. In the same way we also have so many differences in our society that make our life enrich and also fun. In this lesson we will try to understand the different aspect of these differences or call as diversity.

v DIVERSITY:

Ø The diversity refers to the existence of variations or differences in a group of people.  The differences can be in race, , gender, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs or other ideologies.
Ø Lets see in the story of Sameer Ek and Sameer Do
Samir Ek
Samir Do
Samir Ek is a student and goes to school daily.
Samir Do is selling the newspaper daily.
He speak Hindi and English
He can speak only Hindi
He belongs to Hindu religion
He belongs to Muslim religion
He celebrate festivals like Holi, Diwali, Dashara, Shivratri etc.
He celebrated like id-i-milad, Idul fittur, Murraham, Ramzaan etc.


v DIVERSITY IN INDIA:

Ø  India is a country of vast diversity. People speak different languages, celebrate different festivals and eat various types of food. Diversity is a reality created by individuals and groups from a broad spectrum of demographic and philosophical differences.

v FACTORS INFLUENCING DIVERSITY: 

Ø Historical and geographical factors are the two factors that influence the diversity of a region. Life of people near the sea is different from the people in a mountainous area. Let’s see-
Ladakh
Kerala
It is situated in the lap of Himalaya. It is a union territory.
Kerala state is located in the South-Western part of India
It is a cold desert since very less rain full.
It is situated near to the sea.(Arabian sea)
Here no agriculture. So People keep animals like sheep, yak, goat cow.
The fertile land and climate are suited to growing rice
It is popular for its pashmina woolen
It is famous for its spices like pepper, cloves, cardamoms etc.
In Ladakh mainly Buddhism and Islam religion is popular.
People in Kerala practice different religions such as Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism

v UNITY IN DIVERSITY:

Ø India is a land of different religions and communities. There is a great diversity in our habits and customs and yet we all live together as Indians. “Unity in Diversity” has been the distinctive feature of our country.

Ø India is a country of several diversities. Since it is a very big country, people in different parts differ in their customs, language, habits, etc. These diversities arise from the fact that different regions have different histories and environments.
Ø Despite the diversities listed above, there are similarities that unite us. We all are Indian and during the freedom struggle, the whole country came together to send away the British, Irrespective of their diverse backgrounds. The Indian national flag is the most important national symbol and it reminds us of our unity in diversity.

v GLOSSORY

v Habitat: The geographical area where a living being has adapted and lives comfortably is called the habitat of that living being.
v Resources: Anything that can be of any use in any activity is said to be a resource.
v Inequality: The differences between two or more people that arise because of their abilities, resources and opportunities, or their caste, etc. are termed as inequalities.
v India's national anthem JAN-GAN-MAN composed by Rabindranath Tagore,
v Discovery of India-It was a book written by our first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru. In this book he coined India as “Unity In Diversity”
v The Jallianwalla Bagh Massacre: On April 13, 1919, a British general O Dyre and his troops attacked a large meeting of unarmed people. Several men and women were killed brutally. This incident is called the Jallianwalla Bagh massacre after the name of the meeting place in Amritsar, Punjab.
v CHINAWALA-The name was given to the net used in Kerala to catch fishes. Utensil used for frying is called the cheenachatti,
v Onam- Famous festival of Kerala on which boat race is held.
v The Apostle of Christ, St. Thomas is believed to have come here nearly 2000 years ago and he is credited with bringing Christianity to India.
